Henry Andrews Dyer of Dyersville, Iowa served with Company C of the 21st Iowa Infantry from August 1862 to July 1865. On May 30, 1863 he was taken prisoner and held at Shreveport, La. where he became severely ill. After his release and a subsequent furlough he was given a quartermaster position at Camp Distribution and was later detailed to the headquarters of Major General Ed. R.S. Canby was born in Piatt's Landing, Kentucky, to Israel T. and Elizabeth (Piatt) Canby. He attended Wabash College, but transferred to the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1839. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Infantry and served as the regimental adjutant. Although often referred to as Edward Canby, a biographer has suggested that he was known as "Richard" during childhood and to some friends for most of his life. He was called "Sprigg" by fel...
